Why Buzz and Word of Mouth?

Word of Mouth is the most credible form of marketing. Studies that measure the credibility of marketing mediums have determined that word of mouth is the most credible, and by a big margin. It is also very effective at getting people to take action.

We define Buzz as simply word of mouth that spreads faster and wider than traditional word of mouth, usually via the internet or email.

If you think about it, word of mouth just makes sense. If a family member or friend says you should see a movie, read a book or buy a Hyundai, you are likely to act on it based on your opinion of them and less on the factual data of the product. The product is piggy-backing on the respect you have for the individual.

The challenge around Word of Mouth and Buzz is that you cannot easily buy it. The best kind comes from just having a great product that people want to talk about.

But a great product is rarely enough. You can be sure that there are many great products that sit on shelves or in basements and never take off because not enough people spent time getting to know them in order to start creating word of mouth.
