The Problem

K–8 students need consistent daily practice in foundational skills — reading, math, writing, civics, and more. Most platforms either drill mindlessly or require expensive school-district contracts with lengthy procurement cycles. There was no affordable, mastery-based platform designed for individual students, homeschool families, and microschools that could also scale to serve schools.

What Was Built

Outstanda is a full learning platform operated under Liquid Learning Inc., serving students, parents, and schools. It covers daily foundational skill practice across multiple subject areas with a mastery-based progression model — students advance when they've proven competency, not just when time passes.

The platform was built with PHP and MySQL on a Cloudways-hosted environment, with flat-file JSON for content management and OpenAI's API powering grading, feedback, and content generation throughout. The current outstanda.com product serves individual students, parents, and homeschool families. The full 15+ module feature set described here represents the enterprise platform — available for schools and organizations seeking a comprehensive mastery-based solution.

The AI Angle

OpenAI's API is woven throughout the platform — grading open-ended civics and writing responses, generating personalized feedback, moderating student wellness signals in written submissions, and powering the content generation pipeline. AI does the work that would otherwise require a team of human graders at scale. This wasn't a bolt-on — it was designed in from the beginning.

Technical Stack

Built on PHP and MySQL with a custom MysqliDB wrapper. Content is managed through flat-file JSON, keeping the system fast and flexible without a heavy CMS. The platform is hosted on Cloudways (Nginx + Apache) and integrates the OpenAI API for grading, content generation, and moderation. Authentication is handled via Google OAuth. The student-facing interface uses UIKit with a collapsible sidebar navigation.

Additional features include an affiliate tracking system using eduref= parameters, an HTML5 canvas game layer (Asteroids, Wordle-style, maze adventure, mountain climber, ball-ramp physics, paddle tennis), and a Creator Studio AI coding curriculum for middle schoolers.

The Result

A fully live, multi-module platform that would typically require a development team and 12–18 months to ship. Built and launched by a single developer using AI-augmented development practices — iterating rapidly from module to module without sacrificing quality or reliability.
