It took me years to discover a simple truth.  Internet Marketing is simply online lead generation.

When you fully digest this fact, it helps you think about Internet Marketing in a different light.  It also really simplifies things.

When you are considering an Internet Marketing Strategy, you have to ask yourself – in what way will this activity generate sales or leads for me?

I like social media, but I do not see it as the best way to spend my time for lead generation in most cases.  Sure, people will follow you but what is the quality of that lead?

That is why old fashion email lists are still better.  It is more of an asset and more likely to turn into money.

Stop worrying about which Internet Marketing strategies are going to work best for you and instead think about how to generate the best leads for your business from the web.  Then you are going to be building some value.

If you are unfamiliar with generating leads online, you might be out searching for one piece of online lead generation software that will cure all your problems.

That is akin to looking for one piece of software that does all your marketing – it does not exist.  Although there are big packages that will help you tie together many Internet Marketing activities.

What you really want to do is to do a flow chart of what your lead generation strategy looks like.  Then buy or get free lead generation software that can do the key parts of it for you.

In our case, we focus on one very specific lead generation technique called Inbound Marketing.

Inbound Marketing is when you build online resources that attract buyers to you instead of you going out and getting them.  Sounds magical, right?  The disadvantage is that it takes time to develop and see steady results, and it takes work or a decent budget to hire people to do the work for you.

However, I have seen this produce some big results for some clients in as little as two to three months when they really took the marketing strategy seriously.

So if you are looking for lead generation software, start by mapping out your lead generation strategy and identifying those pieces you need.  Here are some things you may need depending on your approach.

1. Lead Capture Software – Usually part of your CRM or Autoresponder

2. Keyword Research Tool – To help you identify target keywords and target markets.

3. Blog Writing Software – which can help you write and link faster and easier and get better SEO results (this is the primary purpose of our software)

4. Analytics – You can get free software to track analytics such as visitors and you can pay to have SERP (where you rank for keywords in the seach engines) monitored as well.  Our software includes SERP for you as it is what drives your results.

5. CMS – A system for managing the content on your website.  We recommend the open source free software WordPress.

6. Misc.  There are some other things like you may need video editing, audio, image editing and more. 

All of this is involved in Inbound Marketing.  The good news is this is a low cost lead generation strategy that gets stronger the longer you do it and much of the lead generation software is free or very low cost.

New Internet Marketing Software is released by someone every week.  Trust me, you cannot keep up with all the options.  I have tried.

However, there are some fundamentals that everyone agrees on.

First, to get good SEO results in Internet Marketing and SEO most experts agree that the free, open source content management sofware WordPress is hands down the best.  Easy to set up, flexible and it will help you rank better.

Next, there are some other free Internet Marketing software tools you need to get, such as Google Analytics.  This will help you track your Internet Marketing results.

So is all Internet Marketing Software Free?

No.  There are some things that are worth paying for.

The first one is your list building system.  I have used aWeber for years and have gotten great results with it.

Next, you should look at what your goals are.  If you want to produce more organic, free traffic then you should manage your WordPress site with a tool like our lead generation system.

The main thing with Internet Marketing software is to know what your strategy is before you start buying tools.  You would not want to buy a Twitter automation tool if you are trying to build quality relationships, for example.

Internet Marketing software is only good if it contributes to your online marketing goals.  And if it does not, then it may be best not be get sidetracked by it.

 

Internet Marketing Mistakes

Here are some common Internet Marketing Mistakes people make when they are trying to promote their company.

  1. Trying to do too many things at once – instead master one area and then learn a new one.
  2. Failing to create a system – instead of just trying things out, build a repeatable system.
  3. Not measuring results – what factors are going to show you if the marketing system you have built is working?
  4. Giving up too early – Internet Marketing takes time – ignore the hype – it is worth building but takes longer than advertised.
  5. Lack of focus – What are you selling and who are you selling to?  The clearer you are on that the better the results you will get.

Testing Your Call to Action

I do not think that I am very popular when I tell someone that Internet Marketing never ends.  It does not end with site set up.  It does not end with blogging.  It does not end with link building.  It does not end with social media.

It only ends when you stop trying and say that is enough – and you will always still be leaving opportunity on the table.

There are simply too many options and as you master one, there is something else to do if you want to. 

A call to action is your attempt to generate leads from your website.  Your call to action may be a free report, request form for a demo or it may be a call to buy something on the web.

Sites without a clear call to action are more like children lost in the forest.  And that is how a visitor will feel also on your site if you do not make it clear how to take action.

Even when people do get all the other pieces in place and start generating good traffic, I often see that they are happy with their call to action and they do not keep testing different ones.

It is hard because to test it you either need to put a split test in place with custom software or you need to test one for a few weeks, track the data, and then test another one for a few weeks.

There are few things I like less than writing a long sales page – and those need tested as well.

If you want to throw some money at it and figure out which is the best call to action faster, then use adwords to drive more traffic and test the thing quicker.  Online lead generation works, but you have to test your call to action to find what people react to best.
