Generating B2B Sales Leads is harder than generating consumer leads most of the time.  I say most of the time, because some things that are a common problem for all businesses can use the consumer lead generation model and be successful.

However, for the sake of this article lets assume you are selling a high end B2B product and you want to generate qualified B2B sales leads and each sale is very valuable to you.

I see this all the time and the problem here is that the business that wants to think like consumer sales leads and they get discouraged when they do not get a flood of sales leads for their consulting practice or their specialized software.

I think the first thing to say is that not all products and services are best sold on the web.  In nearly all cases, the web can contribute to the sales process and can generate the occasional lead, but it will not replace a good sales force and often for these services, the lead (no matter how you got it) need fast and good followup.

Next, if your leads are worth, say $10,000 over the lifetime of the customer and you are going to have to spend hours talking to them, helping them, etc. etc to earn that money, the last thing you want to do is generate 100 low quality leads every week.  In B2B Sales Leads generation, getting a couple of high quality sales leads that you can put into your B2B sales funnel is a great month.

How do you generate targeted sales leads online?

There are certainly many ways, but the first thing you need to get clear on is what targeted leads look like.

For example, is a good targeted lead someone in a specific division of a specific company or is it anyone in a particular industry or is it just within a certain radius of your office?

Knowing what your targeted lead profile is will help you craft a better strategy and build yoour own lead generator.

For example, our Buzzoodle system is a good lead generator but it does not work evenly for everyone.  To be successful building online lead attraction sites you need to know who your target market is and what they are searching for online.  Sometimes they are not searching, in which case you should use a different strategy.

I like to tell people that a good fit for our system is a company that 1) Would have advertised in Yellow pages in the past or 2) Solves a clear problem that frustrates people (forcing them to research a solution online) or 3) A service that people do not need regularly but when they do need it they are likely to turn to the web.

So repairing a lawn mower will certainly be a good fit, but where to buy socks is not, because people do not need to look that up.

There are some vague areas that are not crystal clear on this kind of Inbound Marketing strategy.  For example, financial planners are not going to get a bunch of leads, but getting only a few a year that turn into sales may make the process worth while.

Also, MLM or Network Marketing leads are not always a good fit.  However, if someone hears about a product like this they often do research before buying and this can produce a very positive, targeted lead online.  My biggest issue with network marketing is that if your do not make enough on a few sales per month then it is probably not worth the investment.  This has less to do with a marketing style and more to do with your business model.

Targeted sales leads are not hard to generate online, but you will not always get huge volumes of leads.  So you need to make sure your investment is going to be a profitable one

3. Blog Writing Software – which can help you write and link faster and easier and get better SEO results (this is the primary purpose of our software)

4. Analytics – You can get free software to track analytics such as visitors and you can pay to have SERP (where you rank for keywords in the seach engines) monitored as well.  Our software includes SERP for you as it is what drives your results.

5. CMS – A system for managing the content on your website.  We recommend the open source free software WordPress.

6. Misc.  There are some other things like you may need video editing, audio, image editing and more. 

All of this is involved in Inbound Marketing.  The good news is this is a low cost lead generation strategy that gets stronger the longer you do it and much of the lead generation software is free or very low cost.

Effective Online Lead Generation

 

Effective lead generation online is going to be done through more than one tool.

The Internet is far more diverse than television, print or phone.

So if you are wondering how to generate leads online you should start by working your way backwards.

Step One is the end.  Why would someone become your lead?  What does a traditional lead’s profile look like?  Why do they want to talk to you?

Then ask yourself what you could offer them or say to them to get them to take action.  This is called the call to action and it is a critical part of successful lead generation online.

Next you want to work your way out to where that audience is finding information.  What are they searching on in search engines?  What forums are they joining?  Do they talk about things more on Twitter or FaceBook?

Then you craft lead generation strategies for all the avenues that could lead the right people to your call to action.  This could include adwords, SEO, social media sites, banner ads and more.

The fact is, there is no one perfect way to do lead generation.  It is all about reverse engineering how people find you and improving it in all avenues.
